When the Earth rumbles

When the Earth rumbles is a teaching guide produced by La main à la pâte.

It was translated from the original book Quand la Terre gronde published in France in 2012. The La main à la pâte foundation thanks the International Science, Technology and Innovation Centre for South-South Cooperation (ISTIC) for their translation.

When the Earth rumbles offers to primary and lower secondary school teachers a complete program for studying natural disasters, particularly volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis, with the aim of helping children around the world to study, understand, and self-guard from natural hazards.

The core of the module consists of 4 sequences, each developed in a number of sessions:

  • Sequence 1: Volcanoes
  • Sequence 2: Earthquakes
  • Sequence 3: Tsunamis
  • Sequence 4: My county in the face of risks

Please consider that this project was originally designed for French classes, so it includes global references but also some local French-contextualized references about earthquakes and volcanoes. These are examples and teachers are encouraged to adapt the corresponding sessions to the context of their country.
