SUSTAIN First European Conference in Bled, Slovenia

Educating for sustainable development through inquiry-based science education: a contribution to the challenges of the 21st century

SUSTAIN First European Conference Bled, Slovenia
24 & 25 September 2014

Aims and scope of the Conference

The SUSTAIN project Supporting Science Teaching Advancement Through Inquiry, aims at supporting the implementation at school of a more relevant and effective approach of the education to sustainable development (ESD) thanks to the specific contribution of inquiry-based science education (IBSE).

Especially, SUSTAIN is building pedagogical contents, tools and teachers’ professional development activities that will foster among children the scientific understanding of issues and challenges linked to sustainable development, and thus reinforce their future ability to act as informed and responsible citizens.

The First European Conference of the SUSTAIN project is organized by the University of Ljubljana.

Its main goal is to gather actors involved in dynamics of ESD and/or IBSE to facilitate the convergence between both approaches and enlarge their common capacity to address current environmental, economic and social challenges that are at the heart of sustainable development.

The conference will specifically address the following issues:

  • Enlarging the awareness regarding the need for a scientific literacy for sustainable development issues be they environmental, economic or social;
  • Reviewing the state of the research and practice in ESD and IBSE with an attention to the latest trends regarding the links between both approaches;
  • Providing participants with up-to-date information on ESD related issues with an IBSE point of view.

Target audience: educational experts, teachers, educators, education policy makers and other stakeholders actively involved in ESD at school.
